Chris Lacinak Keynoting at International Television Archives Conference
20 October 2014
AVPreserve President Chris Lacinak will be presenting a keynote talk at the upcoming Fédération Internationale des Archives de Télévision / The International Federation of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA) World Conference in Amsterdam. FIAT/IFTA brings together a diverse group of international broadcast and state archives to discuss the issues and learn solutions to managing and preserving video content. The major shifts in the broadcast industry over the past decade to digital and online distribution (and the range from HD to streaming quality), as well as the increasing re-use of past content, have presented new challenges to archives responsible for the long term care and use of materials. FIAT/IFTA and its members have become leaders in developing and sharing solutions for these challenges.

AVPreserve Ramping Up for October, The Month of Conferences
24 September 2014
The temperatures have (thankfully) cooled down, but our schedule hasn’t! The AVPreserve team is speaking at a pile of conferences in the month of October.
AVPreserve at IBC
9 September 2014
AVPreserve President Chris Lacinak will be jetting off to Amsterdam this week to attend the International Broadcasting Convention. Much like the National Association of Broadcasters convention in the US, IBC is a massive conference and exhibition where thousands of people who create, distribute, or manage media come together to see the newest technologies and hear practitioners speak about their work with digital asset management, metadata for search and distribution, storage, and digital preservation. This will be our second year attending IBC and it has quickly become a must-do on our calendar so we can stay abreast of tools and other resources that help us support our clients better, while also providing a valuable international perspective on the theories and approaches to media preservation and access. And of course we’re looking forward to catching up with our friends and colleagues from PrestoCentre, the EYE Film Institute, VIAA, and more. The Skipjacks are being packed as we write!

For God’s Sake, Stop Digitizing Paper
25 August 2014
We are all aware of the expectation from the general public that EverythingEver is digitized and available online already. This is of course frustrating because, 1) when presented with the reality there is often a negative reaction from the public, primarily that archives are lazy and behind the times, but also, 2) the perception is often trotted out as a reason why preservation efforts are frivolous or don’t need to be funded, especially if the citation is in reference to commercial assets that are widely torrented. “There are a million copies online,” the argument goes, “Why should we care about archives or pay attention to their uptight rules?”, little aware that the bulk of cultural material in existence does not consist of Hollywood films, studio albums, and published works (or student websites from 15 years ago).
SAA AV Archives Night Wrap Up
19 August 2014
Thanks to everyone who made the First 1st Annual AV Archives Night party a success, both the archives who contributed content (program is available here ) and all of you who came out in support of the great work these archives do to preserve the audiovisual record. It was a spectacular collection of audio and video from DC area archives (you haven’t lived if you haven’t seen 1930s color Kodachrome). And, collectively, we totally blew the minds of the Black Cat crew, which is saying something.
